Out of all the beaches in the world, I’m going to go out on a limb and say that Central America & Mexico contain some of the nicest ones. The tropical environment combined with long stretches of pristine coastline make this region a beach lover’s paradise.
For this article, we worked with various travel bloggers to bring you the 17 best beaches in Central America & Mexico.
Now I should note that this isn’t a definitive list of every nice beach in this region of Latin America. Instead, it highlights some of the best ones (in no particular order) that you should definitely consider visiting at some point in your lifetime.
Let’s jump right in and take a look at these incredible beaches.
1. Lover's Beach/Divorce Beach, Mexico
The best beach in Mexico is actually a pair of beaches: Lover’s Beach and Divorce Beach, which are located in Cabo San Lucas. These two beaches are actually just two ends of the same beach, one on the gulf side and one on the ocean side.
Where did these beaches get their names? Maybe from a pair of star-crossed lovers whose relationship played out here? Nope! These beaches were named for the currents and waves that crash along the shore! At Lover’s Beach, the surf is calm and lovely, a perfect place for swimming and splashing around in the hot Mexico sun. At Divorce Beach, you’d better avoid the water, since the heavy waves and powerful currents can pull you right out to sea!
Many tours stop at Lover’s Beach for snorkeling and stand-up paddle-boarding, however if you aren’t keen on a tour you can also hike to the beach! Mt. Solmar offers breathtaking views of the Cabo coast and the Pacific Ocean, in addition to providing a route to Lover’s Beach and Divorce Beach!
All in all, Lover’s Beach and Divorce Beach combine to form the best beach in Mexico, one full of adventure and beauty that will be an unforgettable day. Also, if it is the right time of year, you may see some baby sea turtles making their way to the ocean! This happens in the Fall and early Winter Months from September to December, so plan your trip to these beaches at that time if you can.

2. San Blas Islands, Panama
The San Blas Islands are a picture-perfect grouping of islands off the coast of Panama, just under three hours from Panama City. In fact, visiting these islands is one of the top things to do in Panama City. This unforgettable paradise is a haven for ecotourism due to the pristine environment, and it’s not something you want to miss when visiting Panama.
There are over 300 San Blas Islands owned by the indigenous Guna Yala people, yet tourists are allowed to visit. Only around 100 are inhabited, and some offer huts, cabins, and lodges while others offer camping. There are many ways to get to the islands including small group tours, chartering a sailboat, flying, or taking a water taxi.
If you’re looking to step away from civilization for a while to enjoy sapphire and turquoise waters and soft sandy beaches, this will be the place for you. And added bonus – no hurricanes! Just pick your island and settle into the calming vibe in this magical paradise.
Thanks to Sam from My Flying Leap.
3. Playa Guiones, Costa Rica
The lush Central American country of Costa Rica has some of the most wild and beautiful beaches in the world, and my favorite place to go is the small surf town of Nosara. Located on the Nicoya Peninsula, along the country’s northern Pacific coast, the beaches here are world-class surfing destinations.
One beach in particular, Playa Guiones, has gorgeous sugar-white sand, and it stretches for 4 miles (7 km) from Playa Pelada in the north to Punta Guiones in the south. The beach is wild but swimmable, and is best known as one of the longest surf breaks in the country. Other beaches near here are equally beautiful and practically deserted.
Whether it’s your first time to Costa Rica or you’re looking for a new area to explore, check out the natural beauty of Nosara and Playa Guiones.
Thanks to Lori from Travlinmad.
4. Isla Holbox, Mexico
If you’re looking for an off the beaten path, hidden gem beach destination, then you need to visit Isla Holbox! Lying just off the northern coastline of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, Isla Holbox is still largely undeveloped and unknown, so it’s the perfect time to visit.
Holbox is truly paradise. You can spend your days walking up and down the beaches and relaxing in the hammocks hung up along the shore. If you’re feeling adventurous, the glittering waters are home to incredible marine life, especially whale sharks. Some people travel to Holbox just to swim with these creatures!
With the beautiful beaches and turquoise waters comes a great, laidback island life vibe in the small town of Holbox. There’s amazing street art and delicious local restaurants that make it a well-rounded destination, perfect for a getaway!

5. Las Peñitas Beach, Nicaragua
Las Peñitas beach is located just outside the popular town of Leon in Nicaragua. It’s a 3 mile (5 km) stretch of black sand with big waves, which makes it perfect for local surfers, although it’s less ideal for snorkeling and swimming when it’s windy.
While most come for the surfing, it’s also possible to go horseback riding in the area and to check out the turtles at the nearby Reserva Natural Isla Juan Venado. If you fancy a bit of fishing, a number of fishermen offer tours at a very reasonable price.
The small town of Las Peñitas is a great spot to spend a few days. It has some of the best traditional Nicaraguan food, including local fish and seafood. There are a number of bars and restaurants to choose from as well as many vegan and vegetarian options.

6. Playa Delfines, Mexico
Playa Delfines is one of the best beaches in Cancun. It’s located in the hotel zone (Zona Hotelera) and it features a long stretch of white sand and turquoise water. Playa Delfines is truly a paradise that’s suitable for families, couples, and anyone else who loves beaches.
Although it’s located south of the big resorts, there are still some palapas and restaurants available to visitors. The closest bus station is Estacionamiento del Mirador and you can easily get here from the other parts of the hotel zone, as well as from downtown Cancun. El Rey Archaeological Zone is also located near the beach.
What makes this beach special is its water color and fine quality sand. Additionally, it’s more relaxed than the other beaches in Cancun that are located next to the big resorts.
Thanks to Alexander from Gourmand Trotter.
7. Secret Beach, Belize
This is a great beach for kids since it’s bayside with almost no waves to contend with. The water is typically clear, so even when the other side of the island has seaweed blocking the shoreline, you can escape to Secret Beach for some nice swimming water.
8. Santa Teresa, Costa Rica
Costa Rica is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in Central America. The country is lucky to have beaches on both sides, the Caribbean coast on the East and the Pacific coast on the West. Of all the beaches I encountered in Costa Rica, Santa Teresa was my favorite.
Santa Teresa is a laid-back bohemian beach town that attracts yogis and surfers. The beach goes on for miles and is full of gorgeous white sand to relax on, surf, and watch the sun go down. The waves on Santa Teresa beach are consistent and perfect for beginners who are learning to surf. Horseback riding is another popular activity to do on the beach since it’s so long.
Santa Teresa beach also has some of the prettiest sunsets in Central America since the sun sets directly over the ocean. If you’re looking for a place to chill out while backpacking Costa Rica, Santa Teresa beach is perfect.

9. Manzanillo Beach, Mexico
One of the most beautiful (and swimmable) beaches in Mexico is Manzanillo Beach, located in Puerto Escondido in the state of Oaxaca. Although often overlooked in favor of other famous beaches in Puerto Escondido, such as the surfers mecca of Playa Zicatela, Manzanillo Beach offers several unique characteristics that makes it ideal for spending a relaxing day at the beach.
Set within a protected cove shared with Playa Angelito, the soft golden sands slope gradually to the waters edge, allowing for easy entry for children and people who aren’t strong swimmers. The beach itself is lined with towering palm trees that offer plenty of shade along with a wealth of seafood restaurants where lounge chairs can be enjoyed for the day with the purchase of a meal and/or drink.
Sip a margarita, enjoy some fresh-picked oysters and go snorkeling away from the crowds – it’s beach-day perfection at Playa Manzanillo on Mexico’s Pacific Coast.
Thanks to Michele from A Taste for Travel.
10. San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua
San Juan del Sur is a gorgeous beach region in southern Nicaragua and, in my opinion, has by far the best beaches on the West Coast. San Juan del Sur town makes a great place to base yourself before heading out to the beaches for some great surf or swimming action.
Let’s start with the Bay at San Juan del Sur. This is a popular place for a sunset and a delicious cocktail on the beach; you will also share the beach with locals enjoying a dip and playing on the sand. There is a fantastic vibe and some great parties that can be found in San Juan del Sur.
For surf action head to Playa Maderas, which is a short way outside of the town on a fairly bumpy track. And then there is Playa Majagual, which is less touristy but has some great waves for beginners. We were the only ones on the beach the day we visited.
In short, it’s easy to enjoy pristine white sands, good waves for surfers, and the laid back vibe that Nicaragua offers.

11. Cayos Zapatilla, Panama
Cayos Zapatilla comprises two islands surrounded by a tropical reef and is regarded as having some of the best beaches in Panama. Part of the Bastimentos National Marine Park, it’s a secluded area with white sand and turquoise waters that make it great for swimming or just hanging out. It remains a pristine escape with its multitude of beautiful beaches, rivaling even those of the Dominican Republic.
You will have to bring your own food as no businesses exist in the protected area, which only adds to its charm, isolation, and appeal. It takes no effort to find a secluded spot and a part of the beach all to yourself. The trails along the beach all lead to a pristine wilderness that’s great for exploring, in between time well spent along this beautiful stretch of coastline.

12. Playa Palancar, Mexico
Located just 30 minutes from Playa del Carmen by ferry, Cozumel is a small island known for its beautiful beaches and incredible reefs that are great for snorkeling and scuba diving. The picturesque beaches on Cozumel make it the perfect destination for an all-inclusive getaway, or simply a relaxing day trip from Playa del Carmen or the Riviera Maya.
About 25 minutes from the Cozumel ferry terminal, you’ll find Playa Palancar, which is one of the best beaches in Mexico. Playa Palancar features stunning shallow turquoise water and powder white sand. Plus, its location on the southwestern tip of the island makes it less likely to get hit with the seaweed that can sometimes impact many other beaches along the Riviera Maya.
Playa Palancar offers a few different beach clubs and restaurants, where you can rent lounge chairs and order food, beverages, and frozen cocktails. There’s also a dive shop on-site where you can book snorkeling or scuba diving excursions to view the nearby reefs or “El Cielo”, a popular sandbar for viewing starfish.
Mexico’s Playa Palancar is a such a beautiful place to visit, whether you’re looking for adventurous beach activities or simply a relaxing day in the sun.

13. Tamarindo, Costa Rica
Tamarindo is a special and unique destination located on Costa Rica’s pacific coast. It’s the perfect place for families that want to come down and enjoy diverse activities or couples that want to simply relax by the beach and have cocktails brought to them all day. But it’s also a great and easy place for solo travelers to meet new and exciting people.
Tamarindo is known for its warm water and for its gentle and easy waves, which makes it the perfect destination for anyone learning how to surf. However, if surfing isn’t your thing, there are still plenty of other fun outdoor activities that are all within a short distance from the town, including zip-lining, atvs, and horseback riding.
The area is full of cool restaurants so the foodie in your group will never get bored. It’s also small enough that everything is just a short walk from where you’re staying. And you will most likely find great salsa dancing almost every night.
Thanks to Megan from Peter Pan Traveler.
14. Playa El Tunco, El Salvador
When looking for the best beaches in Central America be sure to head to El Salvador and check out Playa El Tunco. Located less that one hour from San Salvador, you can sit back and relax at this quaint beach town without any worries whatsoever.
Playa El Tunco is famous for its black sand and vicious wave. The beach is a mandatory stop for anyone looking for things to do in El Salvador or in Central America. This is a great place to meet other travelers and you’ll find both locals and backpackers looking to get involved with some of the best surfing that the country has to offer.
Thanks to Daniel from Layer Culture.
15. Land's End, Mexico
If you can’t make the boat ride or walk during low tide to the beaches around El Arco – Lover’s and Divorce beaches – then your next best option is Land’s End beach, which is adjacent.
While the beach is free to use for the public and accessible to anyone, you have to enter through one of the high-end hotels. Just ask reception and they’re sure to let you through. Due to this minor barrier and the fact that it’s quite a long stretch of sand, Land’s End is usually quite quiet when compared to other beaches in Los Cabos. Especially if you make your way toward the Resort at Pedregal, an icon of the area, you’ll find that there is barely anyone there.
After spending some time in the sun, you can also easily go for sunset and dinner at one of the beautiful hotels like Gran Solmar Land’s End. If you’re going for a swim, do take caution as the ocean can be a bit rougher here and the tide is quite strong.
Thanks to Mar from Once In A Lifetime Journey.
16. West Bay Beach, Honduras
Unique beaches and beautiful blue waters are a winning combination at West Bay Beach on the island of Roatan, Honduras. Throughout the year, the tropical climate almost always guarantees great weather and a whole lot of sunshine.
A massive coral reef surrounds the island, providing a sheltered beach that is great for swimming, snorkeling, and diving. All kinds of fish can be seen through the water, such as parrotfish, blue tang, and angelfish. The beach can get crowded when cruise ships are in the region, but it’s possible to avoid the crowds by relocating to either end of West Bay.
17. Manuel Antonio Beach, Costa Rica
Manuel Antonio is easily one of the best beaches in Central America. This idyllic beach is located along Costa Rica’s pacific coast in Manuel Antonio National Park. It features the typical white sand and turquoise water that most people come to expect from a tropical Central American beach.
Perhaps the most unique aspect of this beach is the fact that it’s surrounded by dense rainforest in almost every direction. Within this jungle environment, you can find three types of monkeys as well as sloths, macaws, toucans, and various other species of wildlife. Just be warned, if you leave any food unattended you may fall victim to theft by monkey.

What an awesome post! I’m reading this on Christmas day so I admit, I’m “dreaming of a white Christmas” (and not getting it) but warm, sandy beaches are always great too! Some of these facts are always cool to know too since I always like knowing a thing or two about the places I travel. Thanks for all the great info!
I’m very happy that you enjoyed it Lindsay! I suppose when you can’t have a white Christmas you might as well daydream about beautiful beaches.
Thanks for including me in this round-up! Reading this makes me want to book a ticket back to Central America RIGHT NOW!
Thanks for contributing! And yes it makes me want to do the same!
It’s so cold in Canada right now, this reminds me I need to book a holiday early in 2020.
I can imagine! Hopefully you’ll find somewhere warm to go.
